Class 7 climbs in a team

Posted on20 Sep 2019

Climbing requires coordination, strength, concentration and courage. But trust also plays a major role.
Some difficult steps require verbal cues from the team members looking on. Climbing is therefore very suitable as a team-building activity at an international school, where, of course, the classes change shape every year.

Rain protection and light

Posted on20 Sep 2019

On Friday, a transparent rain cover was fixed to the outer wardrobes in Villa D. The wardrobes should now be better protected even in heavy rain.
In Villa G, about 5 m2 window screens at the entrance and the bathroom have been removed. Thus, much more natural light gets into the common room of the rainbow group.
In addition, a new mirror has attached in the bathroom of the flower group.

Moon festival / Mid autumn festival

Posted on13 Sep 2019

The Moon Festival at the International German School HCMC (IGS)

Today, our youngest from the crèche, kindergarten and preschool began their day
today with the story of the Moon Festival. Tea and moon cake were lovingly prepared
on banana leaves in the morning circle. After the tea ceremony, the story could
begin. After that, the children ran across the campus with their lanterns and all sang
a song for the Moon Festival.
The preschool children, who will attend the first class in the coming year, were for
once allowed to participate in the program of the big ones. Again, a song was sung to
the Moon Festival with piano accompaniment, and the lunar story was presented in
Vietnamese and German. In the elementary school, primary school children sang two
songs, honoring the cultural highlight in Vietnam.
… Once upon a time there was a man. His name was Chú Cuội. As usual, Chu Cuoi
also went into the forest one day where he discovered a cave. In the cave were
young tigers. They were still small, but he was scared of them. He took a bow and
arrow and shot each of the tigers.
Suddenly, he heard a loud roar from the Tiger-Mum. Very quickly, Chu Cuoi climbed
a tree. From above, Chu Cuoi saw the mourning Tiger-Mum. All Tiger Boys were
injured and could not move.
Suddenly, the Tiger-Mum ran to a tree and picked some leaves from it, which she
carefully fed her cubs. After only a few minutes, the boys were fit again and jumped
around happily.
Chu Cuoi wondered about this miraculous healing. It had to be a miracle tree! He
came down from his tree, pulled up the miracle tree and took it home.
On his way home, he met a wise man. This wise man warned him that the miracle
tree could be watered only with clean water.
At home, Chu Cuoi carefully planted the tree in his garden.
For many years Chu Cuoi saved many lives and became famous.
Robbers heard about the tree with the miraculous healing powers and wanted to
steal it. They waited for Chu Cuoi to leave the house and sneaked up to the tree to
steal it.
When Chu Cuoi's wife saw the robbers, she chased them away.
However, she was slightly injured on the head while fighting. She started to forget
many things. She also forgot that the tree could only be watered with clean water.

Soon, she poured dirty water on the tree. Since the tree was not allowed to be
watered with dirty water, the tree roots suddenly broke off at ground level and the
tree flew slowly towards the sky.
At that very moment, Chu Cuoi came home from collecting wood. When Chu Cuoi
saw what had happened, he grabbed the roots and wanted to save the tree, but the
tree was stronger than he and took him right away. They flew high and higher and
higher to the moon.
Since then, Chu Cuoi has lived with his miracle tree on the moon. At full moon you
can see them in the moon.
Every year on the night of the Moon Festival, a leaf falls from the miracle tree to the
ground at night, and people try to find the leaf of the miraculous tree with their
lanterns to fulfil their own personal wishes.

First school day of the pirates 2019/2020

Posted on30 Aug 2019

First School day of the pirates On Friday, Augus 30, 2019, 18 young pirate boys and pirate girls started their first day of school at IGS. Accompanied by Ruben Viertel, the children of grades 5 and 6 welcomed the first graders with the school anthem.
Afterwards, the children of class 1 listened to the pirate story that had been written specially for them.
The story was about a little pirate boy and his little monkey. Both went on a treasure hunt on a tropical island with palm trees, blue ocean waves, and a great sandy beach. The steering wheel was then officially handed over to the pirate captain, Heide Schaffer, who lovingly greeted her crew.
At the end of the enrollment cermony, the students in class 2 sang a song and took the new first graders by the hand and led them to the Forum.
Then the kids got very excited. All children met in the garden and received their „Schultüten“ from captain Schaffer, as it is an old tradition in Germany.
Suddenly, the little bell rang and the pupils went to their first pirate class.
While the pupils started their first lesson, the parents had a cup of coffee and seized the time to have a chat with other parents and teachers.
In the event that one of the little pirates should long for his dad or mom, the captain had taken precautions. On a small wave made of paper, the parents wrote a personal wish for their child. The little pirates were allowed to look at the wave, in case they become homesick on their first day on the ocean.

Dear pirate girls and pirate boys, We wish you a happy school time and and exciting adventures in the land of knowledge.

The Two Storks

Posted on05 Jul 2019

The Two Storks is a short play for reading written by Aaron Shepard. As part of the class drama study, we read the play and students asked if they could perform it. By the time a week was over, it had developed into a full play idea.

The two storks are actually the Caliph and Vizier of Baghdad; in our play, the storks and people are played by different people so this gives a chance for four people to play the parts of two. We use the same effect for the woodpecker, who is actually a princess under a magical spell.

Of course, in the end, the Caliph and Vizier survive their ordeal, learn some magic and the Caliph gets the princess.

Us and Them

Posted on28 Jun 2019

Us and Them is a workshoppable play written by David Campton in 1972. It’s set in an unknowable place in an unknowable time. The audience is led by a character called the “recorder”, whose job is merely to record what goes on but who may not interfere in the events. The groups meet, immediately build a wall, then tear it down and fight a war. After they war is over, they leave and blame the wall for not being higher or stronger.

Grade 6 took on the play initially as a class drama reader but soon realised that they would actually like to perform the play. As workshopping on the play went on, other elements were added by the students: a dance, Crab Rave, and a song, Titanium which replaced some of the Recorder’s commentary and made the play more accessible to a younger audience.

The class underwent their own “us and them” experience during the development and rehearsal stages and almost never took to the stage. Students showed courage in overcoming their diffidence and reservations about exposing themselves to the gaze of strangers.
Hopefully the staging of “Us and Them” will encourage other students to reach deep into themselves and come up with their own dramatic explorations of the human experience.

In the last week of school, Grade 9 students had the opportunity to do an internship at companies of their choice. Some opted for digital design, or very technical professions, others for more practical work or a job in the social field. This allowed the students to get to know the world of work outside of school and gain some work experience.

Class 6 –  40.74% above the national average of Thuringia
Class 8 – 26.79% above the national average of Thuringia

In English, the students of the IGS achieved:
Class 6 – 55.00% above the national average of Thuringia
Class 8 – 46.88% above the national averageof Thuringia

In the subject of German the students of the IGS achieved:
Class 8 corresponded to 100% with the national average / Thuringia. Although class 6 fell below the Thuringian national average by 12.12%, the results are remarkable considering that many students are learners of German and don’t speak German as a mother tongue.

*In the overall assessment of the federal states in the Education Monitor Germany, the state of Thuringia stands at second place compared to all other federal states.

IGS bau-welt Vernissage at Deutsches Haus

Posted on18 Jun 2019

On June 14, the Vernissage – bauwelt took place in the Deutsches Haus HCMC. About 160 visitors attended the exhibition of the International German School HCMC (IGS), which was also organized this year in cooperation with Deutsches Haus and the German Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City. Student works of the school year 2018/2019 were displayed.

Two TV channels and a newspaper came to report on the exhibition:

Vietnam has one of the most dynamic economies in the world. Investment in education, transportation, production and digital networks is fundamentally changing the social lives of people living in the cities. People develop their personality in the process of interacting with other people. Urban architecture decides to a decisive extent whether or not people meet: whether or not there are small street cafes, public transport, libraries or parks. People build and influence nature and themselves. The students of International German School HCMC (IGS) have dealt with the ecological footprints of urban architecture in art classes.   An important exhibit is a huge pangolin made of old car tyres: pangolins are among the Vietnam-based species that are threatened with extinction. At IGS the students learn about the unique nature of Vietnam in order to develop a sense of responsibility to protect endangered plant and animal species. They should also understand how they themselves are part of a sensitive environment.

That this also includes a private contribution is quite clear to everybody. Nobody just throws garbage on the street. Some students have decided to go to school by bike or deliberately use the school bus as their part in conserving a dying world.

Many artists have supported the various art projects this year. At IGS we are very grateful for the insights and the tools that have been provided.

The class choir of classes 4 and 5 accompanied by Matthias Mayr and Ruben Viertel opened the vernissage. Coordinated with the theme of the exhibition: Building – Architecture-Environment – Jan Hagenkoetter developed the musical backdrop of the evening.

School Trip to Magdagui

Posted on14 Jun 2019

Only a few hours by bus away from HCMC, class 5 spent three days surrounded by tropical vegetation, mountains, streams and glorious trees. The thunderstorm on the first night of the trip sounded very scary but lulled everyone to sleep at last. Swimming, Kayaking, zip-lining around the camp, grass sliding, a scavenger hunt and a bonfire with homemade stick bread and toasted marshmallows were only a part of the fantastic programme experienced in the midst of this spectacular natural scenery.

Alice in Wonderland

Posted on07 Jun 2019

Have you ever played the role of a completely different person, e.g. at the carnival or a theater stage? But maybe you have already caught your annoying neighbor or dream of have assumed a different identity.
Theater is an integral part of the school curriculum of the International German School HCMS (IGS). The shy boy plays the king and the self-confident girl plays the beggar. Both change perspectives and experience the world from a completely new position.
Under the direction of Douglas Vale, the young actors aged 6-13 have practiced the musical, Alice in Wonderland. In the IGS Art Studio, the students developed stage decorations, masks and costumes together with Ben Wayman.Musicals are reputed to be a light form of entertainment. It looks simple, but in reality it’s one of the most difficult stage formats: the young artists have to sing, dance, speak and act at the same time. This coordination represents a huge challenge for younger children, but the young pupils have mastered it very well.
