Here in the gardening group we learn how to love plants and the soil. We learn to use tools and garden tools. We have been building wooden boxes in our garden since the beginning of the year. Coriander, tomatoes, basil, rocket, lettuce, various colorful flowers, sprouts, etc. now grow in them. We look after them every day. We like the working group very much because we can have fun together and learn a lot about plants. For example, we’ve learned that plants can taste really good and we’ve also become a little smarter.

Debate Club

This Wednesday, students of Grades 9 and 10 participated in a debating event called “Tug of Words War” and discussed various perspectives for and against the topic, “After the physical requirements of the body, freedom of speech is the most important human right”. There was also a floor debate that provided students the opportunity to critically think about the arguments that the two opposing teams put up against each other. At the end of the debate, the audience voted for the winning team. As both teams acquired an equal number of votes the debate ended in a tie.

Students were invited to a question-and-answer session and worked alongside the artist to develop weird and wonderful narrative GIFs of their own characters. A huge thank you to the artist for sharing her time and work with the students – well done everyone!

NAWI project days at the IGS: IJSO

The International Junior Science Olympiad is a competition for students under the age of 15 who study Biology, Chemistry and Physics. First carried out in Jakarta in 2004, the IJSO now promotes the development of scientific skills across borders and countries. The idea of ​​international exchange between the currently 48 member states plays an important role, especially in the awareness of an encounter school. In addition to theoretical expertise, the focus is on experimentation. In keeping with this year’s motto “Oh Schreck, ein Stain”, the NaWi student council, headed by Ms. Mai, organized four stations at which the young researchers tracked down the stain devil by analyzing the ingredients of different cleaning agents and their effects on the stains under observation. In addition to the joy of experimenting together, the students learned what gummy bears have to do with pigs, why we wash laundry at 30-45 ° C and what living things and detergents have in common. All these were particularly instructive for the participants.

Primary Project : Circus

“Come in, come in! Welcome to the Banana-u-nana circus ”is the motto once a week in primary school this school year. After the pupils in grades 1 to 4 first got to know everything that belongs to a circus with the help of videos and stories, they then went through all areas once for five weeks. In mixed age groups, they were acrobats, jugglers, magicians, balancers and clowns. They were then allowed to choose what they enjoyed most and assign themselves to a group in the long term. Every child could find something like this where they can contribute their skills and develop further. Over the next few months, the students will learn little tricks and prepare a performance for the school community.

Mathematics Olympiad

The Mathematics Olympiad is a competition for students of the Secondary level I and II: In the Mathematics Olympiad, students have the opportunity to prove their math skills and to develop them further. The demanding tasks developed by the Olympiad organisers promote logical thinking, the ability to combine and use math creatively.This school year students of the IGS interested in Math participated in the Olympics. We warmly congratulate the participants who made it into the 2nd round, where they can again demonstrate their skills in a retreat.
We wish them every success and are eagerly following these students’ progress in competition!

Separation and identification of pigments in green plants

Pigments are naturally occurring dyes that play an important role as photoreceptors in photosynthesis in green plants. They can absorb light and convert it into a photochemical process.
The 11th grade, students examined the pigments in green spinach leaves in their practical course this week. For this purpose, the pigments were extracted from the leaves in the first step and then separated using thin-layer chromatography. The individual pigments were identified by evaluating their band pattern and comparing them with expected patterns in reference literature.

Reading day

Entitled “Europe and the World”, the 17th German “Nationwide Reading Day” will take place again this year here in Vietnam. Reading connects people and offers young and old listeners the opportunity to go on a journey of discovery.
At IGS we have also planned an exciting program for Reading Day. While the grown-ups read to the crèche children, school children in grade 8 will organize a quick reading competition for the secondary students.
The reading day is, of course, multilingual and cross-cultural, so you could be meeting readers and listeners of different cultures and languages on our green campus for the entire school day.

IB Project Day

The annual IB project day is about getting to know characteristics and skills that are helpful for preparing our students to successfully complete the IB diploma phase in grades 11/12.
Last Wednesday, therefore, all activities engaged in by  grades 6 to 8 revolved around understanding the learner profile, which in the IB helps to develop internationally-oriented people who have a common awareness of humanity and the planet earth.
In various experience-oriented workshops, the students reflected on what it means to be questioning, thinking, knowing, risk-taking and balanced learners.
Classes 9 and 10 started their day with three debates, the topics of which they had previously researched and presented to their classmates and class 8. The IB teachers then prepared workshops on research skills and academic honesty, as well as understanding global challenges. Class 11 also presented a seminar on time management, because they have been able to gain valuable experience in engaging in the diploma phase themselves.
At the end of the day, a student from grade 9 commented that the newly-learned skills would be of great benefit to his class, and his judgment was very clear: we need more of these project days.

Experiments in science

Experiments and practical activities are an important part of acquiring science skills. On the one hand, tests and experiments help to better understand theoretical aspects; on the other hand, the students learn the basics of scientific knowledge processes through experiments.
Especially in the Natural Science courses at IB, experiments and practical activities are an essential part of the teaching.
This week, our class 11 dealt with the effect of substrate concentration on the activity of catalase. Catalase is an enzyme that occurs in all animal and plant cells and renders the cell toxin hydrogen peroxide harmless by splitting it into water and oxygen.
The students obtained the catalase from potatoes. The catalase obtained in this way was added to the hydrogen peroxide in different amounts. In this way, the enzyme activity could be observed using a stable head of foam and measured for the evaluation.
In this experiment, the students had to organize and plan the implementation of the experiment themselves. Researching sensible methods, making arrangements with classmates and organizing the laboratory equipment and utensils were necessary for this. It was very exciting to see what the challenges were.

The motto of the creative day was “Under the Sea – Save our Sea”. This is exactly what grades 1-5 learned at this year’s creative day in different ways on November 11 2020.
For 20 minutes at each station, the students let their creativity and energy run free: making a pop-up ocean or an aquarium from paper plates and colored paper, making collages of underwater scenes with oil paints, getting to know the secret mermaid language with the help of Puzzles, designing percussion instruments and promoting the sense of community through cooperative games such as the “fishing game”, “drops in the desert” or the longest “pipeline in the world.”

This time our educational days were themed around safety, health and communication. On Thursday, in cooperation with an expert from FFAD (Fitzpatrick First Aid Training), we had the opportunity to complete a first aid course, specifically first aid for children. The focus here was, of course, on the care of small wounds in everyday life and the right action to take in an emergency in cooperation with our nurse.
On the second day, we attended a workshop by Dr. Torsten Seeger on the topic of “Leading parenthetically solution-oriented discussions”. In several role plays, we placed ourselves in the different perspectives of a conversation, and were able to draw conclusions for our daily communications.

Pedagogical days are an integral part of the German school system and not only play an important role in the process of lifelong learning, but also deepen and expand the skills and knowledge of the staff. They also offer teachers the opportunity to reflect on their own pedagogical activities. The teachers used the days to evaluate and develop concepts, especially in the areas of differentiation, language and feedback culture.

What were schools like in the past? What did classrooms look like 50 years ago? What punishments were there for bad behavior back then?
The students in grade 4 presented these and other exciting topics to their younger classmates with the help of descriptive posters in their classrooms. But the focus was not only on “schools of the past”: The students’ pen pals from the primary school in Markt Wald in Germany were also discussed. Questions about how exactly a pen friend works and what should be considered when writing a letter were discussed with Grades 1, 2 and 3 through highly informative presentations.
The highlight of the presentations was, of course, the reading out of the letters received from Germany.

On Thursday this week, IGS parents of German as a foreign language (DaF) students had the opportunity to meet with the DaF-Coordinator, Ms. Barnickel.
In a relaxed atmosphere and with a nice cup of coffee, they were able to gain an understanding of important topics such as:

IGS curricula
The foundation for teaching and assessment of each subject in grades 1-10 are the curricula of the German state of Thuringia. On the basis of those, IGS school curricula have been developed with the adjustments and additions typical for the region.
Each year, teachers prepare an annual plan for teaching their subjects for each grade on the basis of the school curricula.

Grading and reporting
IGS follows the German grading system in primary and secondary 1. This ranges from
1(excellent); 2 (good); 3 (average); 4 (sufficient); 5 (poor); to 6 (fail).
Half-term and end of year report grades are composed by continuous assessment on the basis of grading matrices for each subject.
After completing grade 6, parents are consulted about students entering the Realschule (standard level) or Gymnasium (higher level) stream which is on the basis of students’ grade performance.

IGS Lateral Entrants’ Programme
Students without or with limited knowledge of German have the chance to study at IGS and learn subject content while still studying the language. Language level tests throughout their school career inform students and teachers about learning success. The levels are defined by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and are arranged into six proficiency levels from A1 to C2: Basic User (A1/A2), Independent User (B1/B2), and Proficient User (C1/C2).
Students have the opportunity to sit for the official German Language Certificate of the Education Ministers Conference at two levels: DSD 1 (A2/B1) and DSD 2 (B2/C1). These official language certificates of the German education authorities and the Foreign Office certify levels of knowledge of the German language in schools worldwide and serve as proof of language proficiency to German tertiary institutions.
German as a foreign language students at IGS receive additional media support to continue their language studies at home. The weekly newsletter: Die Schule – Study German Edition informs parents about news of the DaF-department and sends specific tasks for each German as a foreign language group. The school also subscribes to the language software Linguascope (get your password from your German teacher) and uses the vocabulary app Quizlet.

High School Diploma: International Baccalaureate
Special interest was also taken into the IB diploma which students can attain after successful completion of the Diploma Programme in grades 11 and 12. As part of the internationally recognized IB diploma, IGS offers a range of subjects that help students to gain the in the GIB (gemischtsprachiges International Baccalaureate) which is renowned in Germany. The GIB is a sophisticated version of the IB diploma that is recognized as an unrestricted university entrance qualification in Germany and is characterized by a high proportion of German taught and assessed subjects.

Lantern Parade

The U6 and Primary schools presented some music and a play to each other’s mutual benefit. U6 sang “Durch Die Strasse” in its traditional musical setting. Their presentation was fresh and cherubic. This was followed by a rather jolly presentation of “Ich Geh mit meiner Laterne” and “Laterne, Laterne” sung a s a canon.
Class five then acted out the life of St Martin in a short drama which focused mainly on the crucial event in Martin’s life. The play was well-rehearsed and was received with polite attention.
Finally, the senior choir sang a new arrangement of “Durch die Strasse”. It was sweetly sung and projected the rather melancholy tone of the music.

Making lanterns in art class

For our alternative St Martin celebrations this year, classes 1 and 2 have been working hard-to-create large-scale lantern installations celebrating the light festival.
Each student modified recycled cups and CDs to create imaginative flowers and snowflakes.Along with some beautiful transparent collages these were assembled to form two large lanterns, one symbolising the cold and loneliness of hard times, and the other the warmth and care we get from the people closest to us.The lanterns will be on display outside of campus in the trees at the main entrance to the school. We recommend coming by to see them lit at night to enjoy their full effect.

Lantern parade U6

The song “Lanterne, Lanterne”  resounded through Banana Avenue and the other small streets around the IGS. The children of the U6 area proudly carried the lanterns which had been made by their fathers and walked around the campus according to the old tradition. At the end there was a “wake-up man” for each child, also an old German tradition.

Lantern handicrafts for the U6 paren

A beautiful tradition in the U6 area has become the fathers’ annual lantern handicrafts before St. Martin’s festival. For this reason, many fathers – and some mothers – met on Monday evening to design a lantern for their children. With bratwurst and a cool drink there was of course time for a chat. At the end of the evening, the parents could proudly pat each other on the shoulder, because every lantern has become a little eye-catcher, which the children will certainly be happy about on Friday at the U6 lantern run.

A letter travels the world

Class 4 was allowed to test how a letter can travel around the world. The pen friends project was started with the primary school Markt Wald in Germany. The students of grade 4 opened the long-awaited letters eagerly. When answering, care was taken to apply the newly-learned criteria for a personal letter and of course to report on Vietnamese culture, food and traffic.

Of course there were some difficulties, e.g. when buying ripe avocados or finding kitchen utensils. Since we were in a kitchen we were unfamiliar with, we didn’t know where all the utensils were. It took us a lot of time to find them ;).
After an hour of preparation everything was ready. The food was nicely arranged on the plates. We deliberately chose colorful foods, because as a German idiom says: The eye eats too. After cleaning up, we were ready to eat. Our mouths were already watering.
By the way: there is a catering committee at the IGS. Pupils can send their suggestions to the committee through the student representatives; Parents should contact Ms. Thuy directly.

Ghosts, monsters, witches and many, many more exotic creatures came to celebrate Halloween in the U6 area today. Children showed off their costumes at a small “fashion show”. Exciting games and activities such as can throwing or balloon dancing ensured a good mood throughout the day, and the winners also had a delicious surprise waiting for them afterwards.We are already looking forward to next year, when it will be called “Ha-Ha-Halloween” and “Trick or Treat” again.

Evacuation drill

Also in this school year a fire drill was carried out at the IGS.

Then the local fire brigade moved in with heavy equipment and demonstrated their extinguishing exercise on our school campus. The children of the U6 area as well as the pupils of the first and second grades were also given the opportunity to examine the equipment and vehicles of the fire brigade more closely and to ask interesting questions to the emergency services.The exercise apparently seemed so authentic that for a moment some students from our neighboring school assumed it was a real emergency. In the future, the school offices will therefore inform each other about the exercises in advance.

Breakdance Workshop U6

On Friday morning the well-known and successful breakdancer Khánh visited us in Saigon. The children of the flower group and the preschool received their first insights into the technique of breakdancing at a workshop. In addition to two basic steps, we also learned a “power move” and the “baby freeze” and were then able to try them out with hip-hop instrumentals.

We are delighted to announce the completion of our new primary library sign! It’s a long-running project that started with Ms. Rieß, our intern who helped during igs_online last year. The logo was made through combining a variety of student designs. The sign itself was decorated by classes 2 & 3 over the last few months. Why do children play?
Which games encourage children to speak in particular?

These questions occupied the guests of the first “Coffee with us”, to which the team from the U6 area had been invited.
Many families take time to play board games together or look for specific opportunities to provide their children with a stimulating home environment. In conversation with the educators, the parents discovered how various areas of development, such as gross and fine motor skills or perception, could be promoted by playing games with them.
The little tour of discovery through the world of play opened up new perspectives for the parents. With the search books and the set table in the doll’s corner, the parents came up with their own ideas: Why not make an album with pictures of your own family, or use grandma’s old handbag to play with?
In the end, the parents realized that you don’t need expensive toys to give children the opportunity to speak and to support them in their development in a variety of ways

On October 7, 2020 Grades 1to 6 participated in a book party event in the primary library. The students had a chance to look at and peruse the new books that the library had added earlier this year.
Apart from reading the new collections, every grade performed specific tasks: Grade 1 watched interactive stories, Grade 2 sequenced two stories together, Grade 3 made their own colourful pop-up art books, Grade 4 matched summaries for the new German books, Grade 5 matched summaries for the new English books, and Grade 6 had a chance to design their own superhero masks.

Interview with contemporary witnesses

Last Saturday marked the thirtieth anniversary of German Unity Day. On October 3, 1990, the unification treaty between the FRG and the GDR came into force.

 On this occasion, discussions with contemporary witnesses took place at the IGS. In addition to a recorded interview with Mr. Ressler, who witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall near East Berlin, a conversation with Mr. Gigger and Mr. Birkner was also held on site. Mr. Gigger experienced the autumn of 1989 as a contemporary witness in the FRG, Mr. Birkner in the GDR. At this point, many thanks again go to the contemporary witnesses.
The students in grades 7 to 11 then analyzed the eyewitness conversations.

Cardboard Crafts AG

Cardboard Crafts aims to develop the students’ fine motor and critical thinking skills with fun.  In the picture, the students are holding their completed cardboard lamps. They learnt about making stable structures and how mathematics plays a role in making accurate designs. They were also introduced a little bit to electronics, wherein they wired their bulbs to the switch and fixed the light for the lamps.
