STEM AT THE IGS

Dear Parents

The multilingual International Baccalaureate (GIB) places high demands on mathematics as well as the science subjects of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Therefore, promoting STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is a central task at all levels of the International German School Ho Chi Minh City.

U6 Section

Promotion of STEM education begins in the U6 section, where early Science instruction (FnU) is offered weekly to children in different groups.

  • Early scientific instruction is a part of the curriculum

Primary level

Upon transitioning to primary school, students are introduced to scientific and technological methods through subject-related lessons, which are later required in secondary school. Additionally, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is already offered as a subject in order to enable students to follow digitized instruction.

  • General knowledge instruction with selected STEM topics is developed
  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT) instruction starts from Class 1

Secondary level I

In secondary school, a major emphasis is placed on STEM education, as students study mathematics and the three natural sciences as core subjects throughout grades 5-10. ICT is offered as an elective subject.

  • Science subjects as additional core subjects starting from Grade 5 are included
  • Interdisciplinary instruction in the orientation phase (classes 5-6) is included
  • Research projects in classes 9 and 10 are mandatory
  • There is a laboratory practical in Class 10
  • Language development support is given through an immersion program for newcomers

Secondary level II (GIB/IB)

In the IB Diploma Programme during the upper school, it is a requirement to study mathematics and at least one natural science, with one of them being studied at a higher level. Research papers in these subjects are mandatory. The STEM focus of the IB Diploma Programme is rounded off by a compulsory interdisciplinary project.

  • Mathematics and one natural science are compulsory examination subjects
  • A second natural science can be chosen as the sixth examination subject
  • Research papers are mandatory in the examination subjects
  • An extensive extended essay is optional for mathematics or a natural science
  • A collaborative interdisciplinary project with a local or global focus is mandatory
