IGS bau-welt Vernissage at Deutsches Haus

On June 14, the Vernissage – bauwelt took place in the Deutsches Haus HCMC. About 160 visitors attended the exhibition of the International German School HCMC (IGS), which was also organized this year in cooperation with Deutsches Haus and the German Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City. Student works of the school year 2018/2019 were displayed.

Two TV channels and a newspaper came to report on the exhibition:

Vietnam has one of the most dynamic economies in the world. Investment in education, transportation, production and digital networks is fundamentally changing the social lives of people living in the cities. People develop their personality in the process of interacting with other people. Urban architecture decides to a decisive extent whether or not people meet: whether or not there are small street cafes, public transport, libraries or parks. People build and influence nature and themselves. The students of International German School HCMC (IGS) have dealt with the ecological footprints of urban architecture in art classes. An important exhibit is a huge pangolin made of old car tyres: pangolins are among the Vietnam-based species that are threatened with extinction. At IGS the students learn about the unique nature of Vietnam in order to develop a sense of responsibility to protect endangered plant and animal species. They should also understand how they themselves are part of a sensitive environment.

That this also includes a private contribution is quite clear to everybody. Nobody just throws garbage on the street. Some students have decided to go to school by bike or deliberately use the school bus as their part in conserving a dying world.

Many artists have supported the various art projects this year. At IGS we are very grateful for the insights and the tools that have been provided.

The class choir of classes 4 and 5 accompanied by Matthias Mayr and Ruben Viertel opened the vernissage. Coordinated with the theme of the exhibition: Building – Architecture-Environment – Jan Hagenkoetter developed the musical backdrop of the evening.

School Trip to Magdagui

Only a few hours by bus away from HCMC, class 5 spent three days surrounded by tropical vegetation, mountains, streams and glorious trees. The thunderstorm on the first night of the trip sounded very scary but lulled everyone to sleep at last. Swimming, Kayaking, zip-lining around the camp, grass sliding, a scavenger hunt and a bonfire with homemade stick bread and toasted marshmallows were only a part of the fantastic programme experienced in the midst of this spectacular natural scenery.

Have you ever played the role of a completely different person, e.g. at the carnival or a theater stage? But maybe you have already caught your annoying neighbor or dream of have assumed a different identity.
Theater is an integral part of the school curriculum of the International German School HCMS (IGS). The shy boy plays the king and the self-confident girl plays the beggar. Both change perspectives and experience the world from a completely new position.
Under the direction of Douglas Vale, the young actors aged 6-13 have practiced the musical, Alice in Wonderland. In the IGS Art Studio, the students developed stage decorations, masks and costumes together with Ben Wayman.Musicals are reputed to be a light form of entertainment. It looks simple, but in reality it’s one of the most difficult stage formats: the young artists have to sing, dance, speak and act at the same time. This coordination represents a huge challenge for younger children, but the young pupils have mastered it very well.

IGS cordially invites all parents to join us on Friday 14/06/2019 at 7 p.m for this years vernissage of the bau-welt exhibition at Deutsches Haus. bau-welt will showcase students work from the past academic year; with many of the art projects being collaborations alongside local and international artists.

The exhibition has been organised in cooperation with Deutsches Haus HCMC and the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany. The works have been curated by artist and head of the IGS art studio – Ben Wayman. Limited printed invitations can be received at the school office.

We are proud to introduce Rocco the Crocodile. Rocco is over three meters long and full of mangos and sparkling lightbulbs.
Rocco is the impressive creation of our first year primary class – who have been studying a parable on sharing and caring for others at IGS.

New Science Laboratory at IGS

A profound science education is part of the educational programme at International German School HCMC (IGS).
For the higher classes, this includes relevant experiments in the field of genetics, biochemistry, or physics.
For this reason, IGS has been equipped with a new laboratory designed to fit the profile requirements.
Grade 9 has already started conducting experiments in science class as part of their research.
The new IGS laboratory offerers new opportunities for the students to carry.

IGS School Trip to Chiang Mai / Thailand

On Tuesday morning, class 8 of the International German School HCMC (IGS) travelled to Thailand. The first sightseeing was in the old city of Chiang Mail. The students had a presentation about this city. Temples, pagodas, sales and food stalls determined the streetscape. The students were literally moved by the encounter in the elephant camp. Also on the program is an encounter with students of the German School in Chiang Mai. There are currently 141 recognized German schools abroad in different countries of the world. It is good to know that you have friends everywhere in the world.

Festive handover ceremony of German Language Certificates.
Anna Speidel, representative of the German Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City extended the Consulate General’s congratulations to all recipients of certificates and to the IGS on the occasion of the opening of the German Institute HCMC.
The primary school choir under the direction of Douglas Vale opened the ceremony with a moving rendition of ‘We are the World’.
After the opening, the Head of School and the representative of the Consulate General spoke to the assembled people.

We learn best from our own experiences: At KizCiti, the preschool had the opportunity to experience different work environments. All participants of the trip were pretty excited. The pre-schoolers were very committed: They planted water spinach, regulated the traffic, cared for newborns, completed a small surgery and extinguished a huge fire.

IGS is looking for names for an elephant calf in the Leipzig Zoo. The name which was chosen by the students. You can find out here:

The elephants of Leipzig Zoo came from Vietnam in the 1980s. The Saigon Zoo and the Leipzig Zoo can look back on a long-standing cooperation. Two years ago, the students of the International German School HCMC (IGS) heard about the cooperation when the delegation led by the Lord Mayor of Leipzig visited the campus of the German School.

What began as a socialist brotherly co-operation symbolized by the face of the young elephant. Undoubtedly, the youngster with the Disney face is the crowd pleaser at the Leipzig Zoo.

After a bumpy start in life and an operation, the little heartbreaker now need a name. The name for the nearly 15-week-old calf should be related to the Asian habitat, says zoo director Prof. Jörg Junhold.

After the IGS learned about the action through the head of the International Cooperation Unit, the pupils of the IGS thought about suitable name proposals.

We have been informed about the student representation that the name “Trung” prevailed. The name “Trung” is associated with truth and loyalty.

Sensational 1st Prize – Congratulations!

This year, the students of the IGS, in addition to 6 million participants from nearly 80 countries, again participated in the “kangaroo of the mathematics” competition.

We would like to congratulate Thanh Tien Vo (Michael) from class 4 this school year on gaining a sensational 1st place. Therefore, Michael belongs to the 0,85 % best participants in this competition.

The GBA Table Tennis Tournament 2019 attracted about 100 players. We are very proud to announce that the IGS students won Gold (Adrian Dolejschka) , Silver (Felix Culmann) and Bronze (Wesley Hughes) in the category Kids. Congratulations to the winners and their trainer Mr. Nguyen Xuan.

To transport the knowledge of different professions in a more lively way to our students, the kindergarten and the preschoolers had the opportunity of exploring an ambulance from the inside. Our bravest students even experienced different processes of an assignment up-close. We thank the Family Medical Practice ambulance for visiting us today.

Singing Contest „Die Stimmen“

At the annual singing competition of the DAAD, „Die Stimmen Ho Chi Minh Stadts“, students of the IGS won the 2nd place. With the song “Lieder“ (2013) by Adel Tawil, a choreography of their own and sweaters especially made for the performance they were able to impress the audience and the jury. The IGS congratulates Anny, Cathi, Hanna and Lucy (grade 6) as well as Anna and Loudan (grade 7) on this great success.

On Monday, May 6, 2019, we, class 9 of IGS, were invites to visit the General Consulate of Germany in HCMC. There we were led by the Consulat General, Andreas Siegel through the premises. It was an interesting insight behind the scenes and into the work of the Consul General.
After the tour, we were allowed to interview Consul Siegel. He told us very personally about his previous work as a diplomat in various countries, about his internship at UNESCO and about the last three years as a Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City.

Powerfully eloquent visitors at IGS

On the occasion of the regional professional teacher development organized by the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad, 20 coordinators and teachers from all over Asia-Pacific are currently meeting at IGS in Ho Chi Minh City to develop a vision on the topic of the use of digital media in German as a foreign language education.The delegation was musically welcomed by students from grades 4 and 5 with the school song. On the first day, the participants evaluated their schools’ ICT conditions, learned about and actively shared a selection of web tools and best practice examples. Additionally, the official education in a digital world strategy by the German Standing Conference of Ministers was presented and discussed.

ZfA Representative visits IGS

Each school of the network of German Schools Abroad is supported by the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad in Germany. The representative in charge of the regions of South-East Asia visited IGS from Monday till Wednesday this week. During her visit she seized upon the chance of attending lessons and conducting talks with colleagues and various team groups. We took the chance to discuss school curricula, concepts and policies, e.g. assessment and language policies as well general topics in regards to school development processes with her. The representative of the German authority expressed her appreciation at the level of school development and the high quality of teaching that she observed in the lessons she attended here at IGS.

In their project week, class 7 visited the Cu Chi Tunnels. The students were very impressed by the underground tunnel systems. They have learned a lot from the German tour guide about the life of the people living at that time.

Grade 6 safely arrived at Ta Lai a village in the middle of the jungle next to the Cat Tien Nationalpark. Fresh air, no noise and a lot of nature. The students could hardly wait to hear the Gibbons singing.

Rhetoric Seminar in Cái Bè

On their two-day rhetoric course in Cái Bè, grade 9 worked on their confident appearance and tried out presentation techniques. Surrounded by the beautiful nature of the Mekong River, the students prepared for their speeches and the colloquium as part of their research projects. Besides practicing small presentation units, there was time for good food, board games as well as a boat trip on the Mekong. This trip led them through the floating markets. On this occasion, grade 9 tasted the locally produced honey and helped with the processing of coconuts.

U6 Easter Celebration

The U6 section celebrated Easter with a show, made by the small ones, for the small ones.
In the morning we started with an Easter hunt on our playground. After energizing ourselves with chocolate eggs and little bunny buns from our easter baskets, we enjoyed looking at a stage play, directed by the preschool. There were different song performances, a choreography and an easter bunny parade.

Minister President of of Thuringia in Vietnam

The delegation of over 100 participants visited various projects related to education and politics. Minister President Ramelow is a member of the party “Die Linke”. A major focus was put on discussing options of recruiting experts from Vietnam who are proficient in the German language.

Currently, about 130 Vietnamese apprentices are studying in Thuringia. Ramelow’s goal is to train 1000 apprentices per year. The prerequisite for this is sufficient knowledge of German. (B2) Thus, Minister President Ramelow showed particular interest in the language training programme at IGS.

In conversation with Udo Philippus, Head of Unit Labor Market and Vocational Training Policy, Headmaster Dirk Thormann presented the spectrum of language training on campus.

Dr. Claudia Hillinger, Head of the International Office of the Friedrich Schiller University, Jena expressed her interest to cooperate with IGS on the internationalisation of teacher training.

About 3000 people with Vietnamese origin live in the Free State of Thuringia, State Secretary Malte Krückels reported at a reception on the Indochina Queen.

The captain of the ship received great applause, when it turned out that he had completed his training in Thüringen before returning to Vietnam.

InterTech: Do you – know – EdTech?

11.04.2019: On Thursday, many parents and friends of the IGS visited the campus to get a glimpse of the educational technology used in IGS classrooms. The students themselves facilitated stations where they taught visitors of the InterTech event about green-screening, the use of the Adobe Creative Suite and about their community projects. But it was also hands on. Parents got to design their own video game character, acted as TV stars in the IGS newscast, tried out the smartboard, and learned vocabulary using Quizlet. Of course, there are many ways to integrate tech in the classroom. However, it is especially helpful for learning languages. With Quizlet IGS has found an engaging and effective way to keep track and learn vocabulary as well as content. Brian Caleda and Franziska Barnickel organised InterTech together with the students.
